The Moon did disappear…

Despite the best efforts of the weather, it was a spectacular eclipse here in Charlottesville. About 45 minutes before the Moon entered the Umbra, the overcast sky cleared almost completely and we rushed to Fan Mountain Observatory to take pictures. It was fairly cold on top of the mountain, which was worsened by brisk winds. Also, a stream of clouds was covering only the Moon, leaving the rest of the sky absolutely clear. Fortunately, just as the Moon began entering the Umbra, the clouds dispersed and we were treated to an awesome view of the Moon entering Earth’s shadow.

I had two cameras out taking pictures, although both are film, so I haven’t yet seen the results. I’ll post something once they’re done. It was a very cool sight! I’m looking forward to the next one (which won’t be for at least 2 years).

2008 Lunar Eclipse

This coming Wednesday (20 February), there will be a lunar eclipse visible over much of the world. It will start around 8:45pm EST. I’ve provided a link to an info sheet from NASA with some technical information. Hopefully it’s clear on Wednesday!
