A large storm system made its way across the central East Coast today. I heard reports of almost 70 mph gusts in Pennsylvania. A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for central Virginia, but the storm hasn’t (yet?) materialized. The upside was the awesome sunset from the variable cloud cover. I snapped a few shots throughout while writing my lecture:

I spent 3 days in Boston last week, visiting a collaborator at the Harvard Center for Astrophysics. We were mainly focused on reducing some EVLA data, and managed to get a lot done in the short period of time I was there. On my last full day, I took the camera along and took some pictures:

Earlier today I arrived in Socorro, NM for the Synthesis Imaging Summer School. I spent a while wandering around town with other folks enrolled in the school. We were treated to a nice desert storm in the afternoon. Gusty winds, blowing sand, rain that evaporates before hitting the ground.. It made for some nice photo opportunities…

Peter and Katy were married this past weekend in Boise, Idaho. I was fortunate enough to be involved in the wedding and it was an awesome celebration.
I don’t have any pictures of the actual ceremony (I was busy in the bridal party), but I do have some pictures from the other events… On Friday morning the bachelor party was a trip to the indoor shooting range and Impact Guns in Boise. The father of the bride and several of his friends brought along a selection of pistols, ranging from WWII-era small caliber pistols to modern .45ACP pistols. We had a great time! I have uploaded pictures to flickr: Bachelor Party.
The wedding on Saturday was a beautiful ceremony followed by a very fun reception. The DJ did an excellent job of getting people onto the dance floor and the party was always lively. I gave a toast (you’ll have to pester Aleya for the video :p ) and danced to “YMCA” with the other male members of the bridal party. (un)Lucky for me, but I am not in possession of any videos from that
On Sunday, several of us went up to McCall to check things out. There was still a fair amount of snow in the mountains and the air was quite cool in town. We braved the temperatures and took the boat for a spin around the lake. I’m afraid it wasn’t enjoyed by all though, as the windchill at 30mph was somewhat uncomfortable. But the scenery was still quite gorgeous.

On the drive back from McCall, we saw several groups on the river including these kayakers:

All the McCall pictures a on flickr.
During the flight back to Virginia, I flew over the Rockies. I happened to glance out the window at just the right time and was surprised to see The Diamond on Long’s Peak.
All in all, an excellent weekend. Congratulations to Peter and Katy!
