Sailing the Chesapeake

A fellow astronomy grad (well, now former since he got his Phd!), officemate, and friend (Paul) owns a sailboat on the Chesapeake Bay. He’s always happy to share his love of sailing with folks and he’s taken a good number of the astronomy department members out for cruises in the bay. With my general taste for trying new adventures, I’d talked to Paul about going sailing over a year ago. Due to my relatively complicated schedule (and the fact that the weather didn’t cooperate when he and I were both free), it took until this past weekend for things to line up for a sail.

Kelly and I left Charlottesville around 7am on Saturday and joined the throngs of beach-goers making their treks east. After a few hours on the road we arrived at the marina and picked up Paul. This marina was to be our final destination on a point-to-point sailing trip. Six miles of driving brought us to our starting point and we hopped on the boat.
