Recently I saw a blog, This Is What A Scientist Looks Like, which posts photos and brief bios of scientists with the aim of challenging the “lab coat” stereotype of scientists. While I haven’t submitted a photo (yet), I thought it might be fun to do a short photo-essay about a day in the life of an astronomer (me) at UVa. I picked a slightly special day, it being our department’s annual formal dinner. But I think the contrast of the morning’s activity (hiking in the snow) makes it a well-rounded depiction!

Snowing during the hike back down to the cars.

Sweeping my living room in preparation for the post-dinner party.

Getting dressed for the Astronomy Deparment’s annual “Kovalenko Dinner”.

The traditional (and hilarious) post-dinner speech by our department chair, John Hawley.
