Less than two days to go until 1st year qualifying exams at UVa. The multi-hour test (somewhere between 4 and 6, but I forget) will cover basic physics and astronomy in addition to the two courses taught last semester (Observational Techniques and Stellar Astrophysics I). I’m expecting it to be a fairly painful test, but it sounds manageable. The 2nd year students will also be taking the same test. However, on Sunday they will have a second round of testing which will cover the rest of the courses they’ve taken. Assuming all goes well on Saturday, in a year I’ll be taking both days of the test
