I spent the morning in the digital media lab scanning film. After a very slow start (I’d forgotten how to use the software!) I scanned both rolls of film shot at the STS-130 and SDO launches. Naturally, I selected a few of the best shots and posted them to flickr. All three were shot using a Mamiya 645 Super with either color negative (first two) or color slide film (last one).

(SDO and the Atlas V are in that last one, I promise

I was browsing through my photos this morning, trying to organize/find some photos I’ve been meaning to edit since June. I found this picture which I took as part of a test roll to really showcase (to myself) the effect of various color filters on black and white film.
I like the way the road draws your eye to the horizon, disappearing in the trees just before it gets there. The only thing possibly missing from this picture is a 1946 Ford Pickup truck
I just returned from a weekend in SF visiting Lydia before she heads off to Alaska. We had a fun few days wandering around SF, hiking and flying kites. As usual, I took a bunch of pictures. The digital ones taken are already edited and online at the link below. I also took some shots with my Mamiya 645, and I’m still waiting to get those developed and scanned in.

Lydia will be blogging about here summer in Alaska here: http://permafrostsummer.blogspot.com
I woke up to falling snow, a rarity here in town. By the time I’d gotten ready to leave the ground was white (and the roads were a mess). The amount of snowfall here is relatively small, so many (most?) drivers are unaccustomed to driving in the snow.. It was slow going on the way to work. I saw quite a few “stuck” cars, including a truck that’d somehow managed to get stuck in the middle of the road, while going downhill… But the most amusing (scary?) was watching a trash truck sliding down a rather steep hill. I was quite happy to be going the opposite way up.. at least he was going slow.
After a few hours of snow (which got quite deep in fact), it turned to not-quite-freezing rain. Fortunately the roads weren’t too horrible by the evening commute home, so that passed uneventfully.
Twice during the day I went out and shot scenes with my new camera: a Mamiya 645 1000s. It is my first medium format camera and I’m looking forward to using it more. I spent about 20 minutes in the Confederate Cemetery opposite the Astronomy Department shooting pictures of statues and grave sites in the snow. Later in the afternoon I went out to the Lawn and Rotunda, where I was able to hopefully get some nice pictures.
I’ve got slides to scan in from my recent trip to New Mexico as well as some night photography done around the UVa grounds. I hope to spend some quality time with a scanner on Sunday and upload them.
