I recently acquired an early 1980s Schwinn Sprint road bike. This exceedingly beefy CrMo road bike will become my fixie and my commuter bike. Below is a brief description of the progress.
I picked up the bike today from my friend Julie. Although I was a bit surprised at how heavy it was, I was pleased to see it has horizontal drops and eyelets for fenders. Unforunately, it doesn't have all the ideal mounting points for a rack, but I'm sure I'll be able to find one that will work. I've been talking with my former roommate about the options open to me regarding parts. Hopefully I'll be building up a new wheel soon. My initial plan is to first turn it into a fixie, then slowly add the rack and panniers to turn it into a full fledged commuting bike.
I just ordered all the things I'll need to build new wheels. I'll also have most of the drivetrain components. The only remaining part I'll need to buy to have an operational fixie is a new chainring. First, I'll have to figure out the crank situation and see if I can get by with the old cranks. While I wait for the parts to arrive, I'll be disassembling the bike, cleaning the frame, and getting it ready to be ridden again.
The hubs are here! And boy are they sweet!
Well, I forgot to update this page.. In the past month I was able to get the bike built up! Now that it's up and running I'm really enjoying riding a fixie. I just need to do a few minor tweaks to get the gearing right, and then I'll be done.
